Challenge: The Metropolitan Police Service ‘Police Now’ (PN) initiative follows the principles of ‘Teach First’ and ‘Front Line’ – recruiting 2:1 plus graduates into policing for 2 years to perform the duties of a Dedicated Ward Officer (DWO) and make a difference in the most challenging of policing environments. Waves were given 2 months to produce the Training Objectives and present training options for a modern, blended delivery solution, to meet the ‘PN’ pilot course timelines.
Solution: Waves conducted a Training Needs Analysis, embedded in the Met Police HQ in London to meet the tight timeframe. Using the findings from current job holder interviews, and the National Occupational Standards for Policing, Waves produced an auditable Job Specification for a DWO and Police Constable. Visiting the Police Training College – Hendon, the training gap between the new job role and existing training was identified and presented, alongside options for closing the gaps using modern and innovative solutions and feedback from the selected PN recruits, with ROM costs and CBA.
Results: The Met Police can have confidence that the training solution for the first ‘PN’ graduate course will meet the challenges of the future DWO role. Why? It is based on robust, auditable analysis, which can be used for future training assurance activities, map accreditation and show legal compliance. The training solution not only covered the training gap, but reflected the high calibre graduate’s preferred learning methods and expectations of a challenging, inventive, modern and even pioneering initial training solution.
