Challenge: Attaché Branch at the Joint Intelligence Training Group (JITG) is a provider of Defence Attaché (DA) security awareness and operational skills training for HM Forces DAs, Defence Section Support Staff and their spouses. It runs three DA training packages per year (each consisting of four courses) with an aggregate duration of six weeks per package. Attaché Branch was staffed with two C1-Band Civil Servants and one D Band Training Support Officer. In order to deliver the course to maximum capacity there was a requirement for one additional DA Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person (SQEP) to instruct on the course.

Solution: Utilising their extensive Associate network, Waves were able to identify and offer the ideal SQEP candidate, who was subsequently selected from a competitive candidate field. The resource was a former DA who was trained by JITG at Chicksands to operate in the non-permissive environment of Central Asia. Since completing his military service he was employed as the training development officer at the DA and Loan Service Centre at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham, designing and delivering new elements of the DA training programme. Having completed three Grade 1 (Lieutenant Colonel) staff appointments he is an extremely experienced verbal and written communicator who is current in UK Defence Doctrine as a result of working at the Defence Academy. He also has joint and multinational experience as a result of 5 operational tours in Northern Ireland, the Balkans and Afghanistan

Results: In summary the resource provided was able to assist with the planning, administration, delivery, evaluation and continual improvement of the DA Course package. He continues to instruct on all four DA course types in accordance with the endorsed learning specifications, ensuring all learning outcomes are met and assessed. He remains fully conversant with all relevant extant Defence policy, whilst providing timely updates to Attaché Branch staff of any amendments and associated changes. In addition he:

  • Conducts internal validation and training reviews of DA training in order to ensure compliance with JITG and MOD policy
  • Creates, and maintains currency of, course documentation and online resources
  • In collaboration with the Attaché Branch Course Manager, liaises with stakeholders in order to better understand and refine both training requirements and training delivery
  • In collaboration with the JITG Course Design Cell (CDC), writes and develops DA courses and exercises in accordance with course sponsor requirements
  • Prepares and delivers specialist lectures, lessons and briefings for both internal and external audiences as required
