Challenge: Despite significant capability, operational and structural changes within the Royal Artillery (RA), the Gunnery Staff (GS) training requirement had not been reviewed holistically for 2 decades. The GS are essential to the capability development, training, and assurance of RA operational outputs. Having successfully engaged Waves in 2015 to review the Instructor in Gunnery role, Waves were contracted again to conduct the full DSAT process and deliver RPS/FTS and in some cases CTPs for the four other GS roles. The project had to be progressive from WO to Lt Col.

Solution: Waves conducted a detailed Needs Analysis via the collation (e–survey, focus groups and interviews) and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from a large, diverse target audience to identify the generic requirements of GS appointments. More than 140 officers and warrant officers were sampled over a 8 month period across the UK, Europe and British Army overseas training establishments in the biggest survey undertaken on behalf of this customer. On completion of the Formal Training Statements Waves designed the CTPs for the SMIG role.

Results: Waves provided fully compliant and auditable training documentation to facilitate the Royal School of Artillery’s optimised delivery of effective, efficient and consistent training, supporting Business Cases for external providers and the transformation of the RSA into a modern learning environment.
